That Time of Year

21 11 2007

It’s almost that day of the year that I always remember so fondly for the remaining 364. A house filled with the aroma of cooking, pies baking in the oven, the sounds of life and animated conversation punctuated by frequent laughter.

It seems these days that no traditional holiday can be celebrated without some group acting insulted. Well, I’ve never felt the need to apologize for being thankful.

This year I look forward to the traditional turkey and stuffing and other culinary delights preceding the mandatory nap in front of the TV.

I have much for which to be thankful and if you’re reading this or having it read to you, so do you.

To those deployed far from home, we’re thinking of you. We’ll throw an extra log on the fire for you. We’re waiting for you; we’ll see you when your duty is done.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours too. We are the lucky ones so we have to remember our troops. I remember two Thanksgivings in a “war zone” and it actually made me happy to know family and friends were thinking of me and, yes, saying a few prayers too. Make sure your troops know you are remembering them every day!

While living on foreign shores amidst the native peoples with their strange customs Thanksgiving is one American holiday where all us expats trot out the flag and have Turkey together. We love it and have vigorously celebrated it the four years we’ve been in London. For one day we can ignore the native Englanders customary reserve and slap each other on the back, promise to be best friends to everyone and repeatedly shout “AWESOME.”

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Dempsey–You do have a way with words! May I share in your sentiments.
Our son married a Pakistani/Indian/Christian girl, and for thanksgiving dinner we went to her brother’s, where there were about (they moved too fast to count) 25 persons, almost all derived from Pakistan. Almost all are US citizens, and their celebration of Thanksgiving was in the best tradition of America. Our daughter-in-law cooked the turkey and made a delicious dressing using my wife’s original recipe. The idea of thanksgiving permeated the event.
I trust you fared as well.
Looking forward to reading more from you on your blog.
