Dempsey, I loved your article about Jump School at Benning. It brought back fond (?) memories about my time there in early ‘56. I recall that the blackhats had me doing a lot of pushups as I managed to goof a few times. I was not fond of the 34 foot tower; my legs were like jelly going up the stairs. It was a great relief to jump out. Maybe that was the idea. I was even less fond of the 250 foot tower. Being the young fools that we were, we had a contest to see who could release the safety strap first so the idea was to disconnect early and hold the strap in our hands. On my drop a guy got stuck and we had to wait for what seemed like an eternity to get him fixed. In the meantime, I was in a semi-panicked state. I had no problem with the night jumps as all of mine were of that variety.

Dempsey–Great idea!
Pix on new library very informative.
“Leave a Comment” area not self-explanatory (i.e., I don’t have a website and I don’t know where I should use the tags referenced).
Paul Lafontaine’s ideas sound very reasonable.
You’re going to do this AND monitor the email list also?!
Again, great idea!

Demps, I like it, but now I’ll have to learn about RSS feeds. I look forward to your rants…er…diatribes…er…posts, yeah posts, that’s what I meant.

This is a terrific idea. The email stream the keep us all connected are text and informative, but lack some of the flavor that a blog can give. The post following this one about photos of the new library illustrates the point.

While many topics will undoubtedly be addressed here, the challenge will be that careful balance of what is done here and what transpires on the email lists. As users, we have to monitor sometimes weighty email traffic from fellow grads..so what will motivate us to spend that extra moment to come here?

My suggestion is to twofold:
-ensure you solicit a small group of contributors to provide content because keeeping a blog is arduous work when you are the only contributor
-explore different directions until the blog settles in on a specific topic set that drives traffic and good feedback. This will allow us as members to say ‘the email traffic gives us the thoughts of our fellow grads, the blog gives us X. They complement each other.’

With that you’ve added value for us all and the exchange will continue to thrive.

Regards,
Paul LaFontaine ‘86
